        Read Proverbs 1:1-9

        "The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

        To know wisdom and instruction,

        to understand words of insight,

        to receive instruction in wise dealing,

        in righteousness, justice, and equity;

        to give prudence to the simple,

        knowledge and discretion to the youth—

        Let the wise hear and increase in learning,

        and the one who understands obtain guidance,

        to understand a proverb and a saying,

        the words of the wise and their riddles.

        The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;

        fools despise wisdom and instruction.

        Hear, my son, your father’s instruction,

        and forsake not your mother’s teaching,

        for they are a graceful garland for your head

        and pendants for your neck.

        My son, if sinners entice you,

        do not consent." (ESV)

        Proverbs 15:20-23

        "A wise son makes a glad father,

        but a foolish man despises his mother.

        Folly is a joy to him who lacks sense,

        but a man of understanding walks straight ahead.

        Without counsel plans fail,

        but with many advisers they succeed.

        To make an apt answer is a joy to a man,

        and a word in season, how good it is!" (ESV)

        2 Timothy 3:16-17

        "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." (ESV)

        For areas where you don't have an advisor, pray that the Lord would give you just the right relationship to help you in that specific area for the future.

        Compass Commentary- Day One

        We are never too old to learn, but we always need to assess from whom we are learning. The passages above are rich in describing the value of receiving and embracing instruction, wisdom, insight and discretion. They warn of the enticements of “sinful men”, and the pitfalls of where that may lead. We should intentionally seek counsel from wise and Godly people, including our parents, for with that counsel we improve the chances that our plans will succeed, and joy will result. God’s Word is an important source of wisdom and counsel, as through it, He will guide us in our decision-making process as it relates to our lives and our finances.
